Happy Memorial Day
At Peoples Choice Mortgage we are fond of talking about how being a homeowner is the cornerstone of being a part of the American Dream. However, the truth is that the American Dream is not possible without those who fight to protect our freedoms and way of life. On this Memorial Day, our family at Peoples Choice Mortgage would like to honor all of those who have given their lives to protect the values we cherish the most.
A Little History of Memorial Day
Memorial Day started in the years after the Civil War as a way of honoring those who gave their lives to keep our nation united. It was not always called Memorial Day, however. Originally, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. The moniker of Decoration Day referred to the way in which the holiday was celebrated. Traditionally, the graves of those who had fallen in service of our nation were decorated with flowers, flags and wreaths.
The first commemoration of Memorial Day was done led by then Senator of Ohio, James Garfield, who was also a Union General during the Civil War. Although it had been celebrated for over a hundred years, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.
Final Thoughts
This year’s Memorial Day feels particularly special as our nation continues its recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. For many, this is the first holiday where we get to spend a long weekend with our family and friends. It is a great opportunity to fire up the grill, light a bonfire, and enjoy the company of those we love the most. However, it is important to always keep in mind what we are celebrating and who we are honoring. While we use this holiday as an opportunity for fellowship, none of this would be possible without our brave service members who risk their lives for us daily. No matter how you choose to spend this Memorial Day, please keep the memories of those service members who have given their lives for us at the forefront of our thoughts.
